The Logan Square Ramen Shop that was Worth the Month and a Half Wait

Akahoshi Ramen in Logan Square has gained a well deserved reputation as one of the city’s best ramen spots. The restaurant offers a more intimate dining experience, and a great ramen bar where you can watch all of the action in the kitchen. Mike Satinover, the creator behind Akahoshi ramen, was widely recognized online as "Ramen Lord." He discovered his passion for ramen when he spent time in Sapporo, Japan. Sapporo is where he fell in love with the city’s signature miso-style ramen. When he returned back to the U.S., he began cooking ramen at home and documenting his journey on Reddit under the username "Ramen_Lord." He quickly built up a very loyal following on Reddit, and opened Akahoshi in Logan Square.

I had been looking forward to trying Akahoshi for months, and finally was able to snag a reservation a month and a half in advance. We ordered the Akahoshi Miso bowl, the namesake of the shop, and the Ikura rice bowl. I definitely think this ramen was worth the wait, and perfect for a cold, Chicago winter day! I can definitely see why they are booked out for the next couple months. The whole experience reminded me a lot of my favorite ramen shop in Kyoto. Definitely recommend trying Akahoshi if you are a fellow ramen lover.

Akahoshi Ramen

Ikura Rice Bowl: I've loved Ikura for as long as I can remember, and this rice bowl was the perfect size for a light, refreshing appetizer before a big bowl of ramen.

Akahoshi Miso: this was absolutely fantastic and lived up to the hype. The broth had so much flavor, but wasn't overwhelming and it was a pretty big portion. I can't think of anything that comforts me more than a really good bowl of ramen on a cold day.
