Eating My Way Through Japan: Kyoto Edition

Kyoto is easily one of my favorite cities I've ever visited. It perfectly balances traditional and modern Japan. I’d fly back to Kyoto in a heartbeat, and I often find myself saying those words since returning home. Also, now home to the best overall dining experience I've ever had. Here are my favorite parts of our three days in this beautiful city:

Takakura Nijo: I normally eat pork broth ramen, but this chicken based ramen was truly unforgettable and my favorite bowl of ramen I have ever had. Tucked away in the streets of Kyoto, Takakura Nijo is an intimate, 8-10 seat ramen bar that feels like a secret waiting to be uncovered.

Bar Mo: Bar Mo holds a truly special place in our hearts—not just for the fantastic drinks and intimate ambiance, but especially because of its incredible owner, Mo. His exceptional service and warm personality made our experience unforgettable. We loved both Mo and his cozy Kyoto bar so much that we came back for a second round of drinks after dinner! He’s so kind and clearly dedicated to his craft.

Gion Sushi Nakamura: Sushi Nakamura is located in the bustling Gion district of Kyoto and was one of those dinners that will always stick with me. From the expertly crafted nigiri to the calming atmosphere, every detail was spot on. The chef’s dedication to his craft was evident in every bite, making it really more than just a meal—it was a memorable experience!

Cicon Rooftop Bar by Nogha Hotel: Cicon Rooftop Bar had an unforgettable sunset view. The ambiance is relaxed with a tropical vibe to it, making it the perfect spot to unwind with a good cocktail while watching the sky transform.

Coffee at Le Labo's Kyoto Café: A visit to the Le Labo store and café in Kyoto is a must. The shop is well arranged with Le Labo's signature products, and in the back is a quaint, very serene garden with just a few seats. While the café doesn’t serve food, the matcha and coffee were delicious—well worth the stop.

Yakiniku Yamakawa: If you are a wagyu beef lover like I am, this is a great place to go for beef. Located in the quiet alleys of Pontocho, it offers top-quality cuts grilled to perfection right at your table

The Bee's Knees: Bee's Knees is a speakeasy disguised as a bookstore, where you step into a world of craft cocktails. Its intimate atmosphere and creative drinks earned it a spot on Asia's 50 Best Bars list, making it a must-visit for cocktail enthusiasts. Great spot for pre-dinner drinks!
